Vito Giobbie Jr. arrived in Vietnam in 1968 after completing his basic training at Fort Gordon in Georgia
and his advanced infantry training at Fort Sill in Oklahoma.

In Vietnam, he was assigned to the “Big Red One” 1st Infantry Division, 6th/15th Artillery Unit Battery B. After suffering an injury, Vito was reassigned and served with the 8th Army 55th Aviation Unit in Korea before he was honorably discharged in 1969.

After his military service, Vito worked as a mechanic for the City Department of Sanitation. He retired in 2002 after 30 years on the job. Vito never lost his ties to the military. He is involved in numerous veterans’
organizations, often serving as an officer or as a member of the board. He has been the executive director of Staten Island Fleet Week activities for many years.

He was a member of the committee that erected the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Manor Road, which pays tribute to the 84 Staten Islanders who were killed during the Vietnam War. He was also instrumental in erecting the Purple Heart Memorial at Camp Pouch.

In the months after September 11, Vito operated the 9/11 Rescue Center, which was located at the former Stapleton Homeport.

Vito is a resident of Mariners Harbor and a graduate of Port Richmond High School. Vito and his wife, Lucy, have a son, Vito Ill, and a daughter, Jamie. They also have two granddaughters.
