Thomas is the son of John L. Tori and Mamie Tori of Staten Island, New York. He was born April 18, 1948. He attended St. Mary’s School and McKee High School. He played trumpet during assembly.

He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 12, 1966 in Brooklyn, New York. In Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company K, 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF. During the second half of October the battalion was under the OPCON (Operational Control) of the 9th Marines with the CP (Command Post) located at the C2 Bridge southeast of Con Thien in the Gio Linh District of Quang Tri Province. In the early morning of October 15, 1967 a 500 pound bomb fell short of its target and dropped on the west side of the perimeter in the Company K area, killing three Marines and wounding seven, one who would die after being evacuated. One of the casualties was Lance Corporal Tori, wounded and evacuated to the USS Repose where he died as a result of the wounds he had sustained. He was 19 years old.

Remembered by his comrades in arms, the Thomas J. Tori Chapter (VVA #421) of the Vietnam Veterans of America was created in his name, in Staten Island, New York.

Thomas is buried at Saint Peter’s Cemetery, Staten Island, New York. Gate 10 Sec 54, Plot 135, Grave 10.
“As Tom’s youngest brother Joseph, I would like everyone to know how he is remembered by myself and middle brother John. Tommy was a true inspiration for all he left behind. As young as he was, he was a leader amongst leaders. He led his life with an open and kind heart to all he touched and he was a defender of the less fortunate. But most of all, and anyone who is still standing his watch will tell you, he had a smile that would light you up and a laugh that was contagious. His contribution to this world was and will forever be missed!”
