Harold (AKA Buddy) was one of six siblings born to Margaret and Aaron Lane of Elm Park. At the age of 17 1/2, Harold enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the South East Asia theater; he saw action in the Japanese Islands.

Upon his return to civilian life and to Staten Island he met and married Marie Leone of Elm Park. The couple lived in the Elm Park/Port Richmond area then moved to Mariners Harbor.

Harold was employed by St. Vincent Hospital (RUMC) as an ambulance driver; he was then employed by Wallerstein Co. (a division of Baxter Labs), Elm Park. He left their employ after the company relocated to South Carolina.

He was then employed by the New York City Parks Department. Harold was in charge of the maintenance of all the NYC Pools and was a Principal Park Supervisor until his retirement in 1991.

In his spare time he was a volunteer with the North Shore Rescue Squad as well as an active member of the U.S. Marine Corps, Staten Island Detachment #246. He was the proud father of two sons, Gary and Jeff, grandfather of three and great-grandfather of one.

Harold is a descendant of Hendrick Kroesen (1665-1760) the first teacher of Staten Island. Harold’s seventh generation maternal ancestor, Hendryck Kroesen was the Lay Pastor or Vorleezer of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church in Richmond Town ca. 1696. Hendryck led Sunday worship, taught
the Children and kept the records of the Colony. His descendants are still members of the Congregation.
