Christy Joseph Cugini, a Port Richmond native, was a U.S. Army Corporal who served his country during the Korean War.

Growing up in Port Richmond, the Cugini family lived on Post Avenue. Christy and his siblings, as well as, many cousins, attended P.S. 20, and later, Port Richmond High School. During that time, his parents Anthony and Donata, were active members of the community and the PTA.

Corporal Cugini, a military policeman, was stationed in Germany between 1950 - 1952 .

Corporal Cugini returned home and married Mary (nee Hanley) and together they raised six children, all of whom still live on Staten Island.

Christy graduated from Wagner College, and began his career in education at Intermediate School 51. As a teacher there, he had a great impact on his students and their families. His talents were quickly recognized and he was promoted to the district office, where he ultimately was selected as the Community Superintendent. Following his retirement as Superintendent in 2003, the Cugini family was honored to participate in the naming ceremony of P.S. 20 as the Christy J. Cugini School.

In 2011, Mr. Cugini was inducted into the Port Richmond High School Hall of Fame in recognition of his lifelong service to the community.
