Four Chaplains Annual Celebration
Saturday,
Feb 4, 2023
1 pm
The Four Chaplains gave their lives in World War II to save other civilian and military personnel as the troop ship SS Dorchester sank on February 3, 1943 . During the early morning hours of February 3 the vessel was torpedoed by the German submarine U-233 off Newfoundland in the North Atlantic.
The Four Chaplains were last seen standing arm in arm at the top of the ship singing hymns as the Dorchester sank beneath the waves. Of the 920 men who left left Pier 12 in Stapleton, Staten Island on January 23, 1943, en route to Greenland, only 230 were saved from the icy waters by rescue craft. In addition to the four chaplains, 668 men were lost with the ship.
They were the Rev. George L. Fox, a Methodist minister; Alexander D. Goode, a rabbi; the Rev. Clark V. Poling, a Dutch Reformed minister; the Rev. John P. Washington, a Catholic priest.

St. Mary's Episcopal Church is the site of the 2023 annual memorial celebration on Staten Island presented by the Four Chaplains Foundation and the United Staten Island Veterans Organization Inc.
